We're Lauren and Samantha—graphic designer and calligraphy artist who happen to be best friends that turned boss babes to pursue our passion—creating with love, for love.
Here, you'll work with a couple of gals who get it—we've been where you are, both as a bride and a business owner. Find out how to tell your story, focus on what matters, and make a lasting impression.
Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, or some wine, a beer, maybe a cocktail? Girl, pick your poison and let's do this!
In 2014, we were officially accepted into the Graphic Design program at Kansas State University. This is where our entire story begins.
After our first semester of graphic classes and becoming close friends, we decided to study abroad together.
Our summer of 2015 was spent studying design in Florence, Italy and traveling to so many surrounding countries inbetween.
We were inspired by papercranes during one of our trips to Colmar, France. Little did we know these little guys would have so much meaning to us in the near future.
When we returned from Europe, the idea of E+W was all we could talk about. So, after graduation we didn't waste any time. We got busy and started to work towards making E+W our reality.
Here we are, in 2018, growing as a business as well as best friends, while creating all things with love.
We all have that friend that knows no stranger right? The one who embarrasses you by asking a stranger something personal in public? Well, that's Lauren. As embarrassing as that is, we have met some really awesome people that way. Lauren has an ease around people that makes her our marketing go-to gal. She goes to all the wedding events possible, meets with as many brides, wedding planners, photographers, and other wedding vendors as she physically can handle and loves every second of getting to know someone and their business or wedding.
A marketing background doesn't hurt in this situation either, though. Lauren has her Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design at Kansas State University where she met Sam and the idea of East + West developed. Lauren took a job as a graphic designer after graduation and quickly realized that she loved marketing as well. Later, she worked as a Marketing Coordinator. Lucky for her, E+W is the perfect combination of design + marketing.
When she isn't at an event, designing in her home office, or on the phone with Sam, Lauren is hanging out with her husband. They met freshman year in college and have been inseparable ever since. They like seeing how spicy of Thai food they can handle, trying new beers, going to state and national parks, and driving fast.
You know those times when you're so pumped to see your friend after weeks of being apart and you drive to her place, ready to live it up, drink some impossibly strong drinks and rage?! That's me every time I go to Manhattan, KS to visit Sam and what do I find when I get here? Her boyfriend, Chris, answering the door and Sam fast asleep on the couch. Needless to say, I've gotten use to this scene and I just have to wait until Saturday night when we can start drinking at 6:30 p.m. if you want Sam to stay up to a normal mid-twenty-year-old time!
But those long nights of sleep turn into early mornings where Sam has already made coffee, designed three invitation suites, and planned out our day by 8 a.m. She is an incredible morning person with an eye for design and love for minimalistic layouts. With a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Kansas State University, Sam has worked as a branding and web designer following graduation. This background in branding has contributed to the innovative designs that Sam uses for brides + business owners. She loves creating something one-of-kind, something all their own, and being able to strategically think through what they are wanting and make something that feels like them.
When Sam isn't designing, strategizing, or planning, she is at the plant nursery buying a new "baby" or getting Chic-fil-a and wondering around Hobby Lobby. She loves hanging out with her boyfriend, embroidering, visiting her family in Topeka, or watching The Office over and over again.
When you're a kid and have to pick a role model, you always think you have to pick someone older, more established, someone famous maybe? Our role model is Jillian, a childhood friend of Lauren's turned East + West intern—lovingly named Jilliantern (get it?!). Jillian is our role model because she has grace, poise, ease with her style and passion and drive for her future. Even though she might tell you that she doesn't know what she wants to do, we all know she's going to be Insta-famous. Jill, will you still tag us in your photos even when you have 10K followers?!
Jillian grew up down the street from Lauren as a kid. Her older sisters were closer in age to Lauren but as she grew up, we noticed Jillian had a similar style and interests as us. Jill starting coming to marketing events because she's getting her degree in Marketing and Business. She wanted to see what a marketing event was all about, so we threw her right and in and boy, did she thrive at it.
When Jill isn't willingly tagging along to wedding events, she loves exploring Kansas City (her one true love). She loves going to new places and meeting new people while taking pictures of it all along the way. Have you ever wondered how we get some really rad pics?! It's all Jill. We're incredibly lucky to have someone like Jill on our team
I don’t need any added caffeine so whatever I get, it’s decaf. I like to work my way through the menu someplace. trying something new is so fun! But honestly, I mostly just get tea!
Starbucks' vanilla latte with coconut milk. Sometimes on ice—it depends on the weather that day. Either way, I'll have a coffee in my hand for sure.
I love mixing styles, patterns, or colors. Dressing up is fun like once a week, but I’d much rather be in my oversized chiefs sweatshirt and my slipper booties.
Something comfortable, always. Whether that's my favorite pair of black leggings, a cute pair of casual Adidas, or a super chunky sweater, I have to be comfortable at all times!
I love slightly feminine design elements and mixing typefaces! Pairing two typefaces that seemingly don’t go together but look great is so satisfying!
I love simple, minimalistic design. A design that has a great typeface that's set well can make a great design.
I LOVE the Lumineers. I literally cried at their concert last year when the lead singer touched my hand. That’s super embarrassing to say out loud now...
If we're talking band/artist, Mumford & Sons or Sam Smith are my go-to's. If we're talking song, Sweet Disposition is my all time favorite. Now, if it's genre, well, I'm all over the board on that one.
